Adverse Weather Policy

At Dave’s Dogs, your dog’s safety and wellbeing always come first. This policy explains how I manage extreme weather - especially heat, storms, ice, and cold - to ensure all dogs are cared for responsibly, whatever the forecast.

Please note: While I always aim to accommodate your preferences, final decisions regarding walks during adverse weather will be made by Dave’s Dogs. These decisions are based on a careful risk assessment of the weather conditions and the individual needs of the dog(s) in my care.

Hot Weather

Walk Time Adjustments

When hot weather is forecast, I may reschedule walks to earlier in the day to avoid the highest temperatures. You’ll be notified in advance if changes are needed. These walks may be earlier than your preference, but my priority is the health and safely of every dog in my care. Please read on for alternative options.

Shaded Routes & Safe Transport

Walks take place in shaded or wooded areas wherever possible, and pavement temperatures are checked to protect paws. Dogs travel in a climate-controlled van to stay cool and comfortable in transit.

Heat-Sensitive Dogs

Dogs who are more vulnerable to heat (such as flat-faced breeds, older dogs, or those with thick coats or medical issues) may have shorter walks or be offered drop-in visits instead.

Dogs Home Alone

If the weather isn’t safe for walking, I’ll either off an early walk (if that suits you and your dog) or offer a drop-in visit later in the day to ensure they can toilet, hydrate and enjoy some company. This will be arranged on an individual basis and I will do my best to accommodate your preference. Please be aware that due to the number of dogs who normally join groups walks, I cannot guarantee a set time to visit your dog as I will need to visit several throughout the day.

Alternative Visits

On particularly hot days, walks may be replaced with a welfare visit. These include a toilet break, fresh water and some quiet time or enrichment indoors or in shaded areas if you have a garden. Dogs left alone will be prioritised.

Group Walk Changes

In warm weather, group walks may be shorter to ensure all dogs are not exposed to heat for any longer than is safe. If a particular dog is showing signs of overheating, the walk will be ended early to ensure the comfort and safety of all dogs in my care.

Water & Recovery

All dogs are given fresh water and returned to a cool, shaded space. I’ll contact you if I see any signs of heat distress.

Temperature Guidance

As a general rule:

  • Adjustments may be made at 20°C for heat-sensitive breeds

  • Walks are often reduced or replaced from 24°C and above

Cold, Ice & Storms

Icy or Freezing Weather

When paths are icy or temperatures are extremely low, I may shorten or adjust walks for safety. Drop-ins may be offered as an alternative. Please provide coats or paw protection if needed.

Storms & Heavy Rain

Walks may be cancelled or replaced with a welfare visit if storms, thunder or extreme rain pose a safety risk. Dogs will not be walked during lightning or strong winds.

What I Ask From You

To help me care for your dog safely:

  • Make sure they have water and a cool/warm space at home

  • Provide suitable clothing in winter (e.g. coat, paw balm)

  • Clear paths or access where needed during snow or ice

  • Let me know if your dog has any health needs that may affect their tolerance to weather

In Case of Emergency

If a dog shows signs of distress due to weather, I’ll act quickly to help — including cooling/warming them, contacting you, and seeking veterinary care if required. Any emergency action will be taken in your dog’s best interest.

Thank you for supporting this policy - it helps me keep every dog happy, safe and comfortable year-round.
